Accessibility Statement and Conformance Report
Last updated: October 28, 2026
1. Our commitment
Successful Mathematics is built so that every pupil, parent and teacher can use it, including people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, a screen reader, magnification, captions or reduced motion. We design and test against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, the standard schools are asked to meet, and we publish the results in full below.
2. What works today
- Keyboard: lessons, quizzes, forms and menus work with the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a "Skip to main content" link on every page.
- Mathematics as real text: equations are text, not pictures, so they can be enlarged and read by assistive technology.
- Contrast in every theme: text contrast is checked in the light, dark and gold themes.
- Phones and zoom: pages reflow to fit a screen 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling, apart from the store page, which is being fixed.
- Captions and read-aloud: videos have captions, and lessons can be read aloud.
- Announced results: right and wrong answers, errors and notifications are announced to screen readers.
- Reduced motion: animation stops when a device asks for reduced motion, and video that plays on its own can be paused.
- Time: a warning comes before an idle sign-out, and teachers can give a pupil extra time on timed quizzes and tests.
3. Conformance status
No success criterion is rated "Does Not Support". 4 of the 50 Level A and AA criteria are confirmed on every page and 1 does not apply. The other 45 are met on the pages we tested and are being confirmed on every page, or have a known exception that is being fixed; until each is confirmed, we rate it "Partially Supports", and so the Services partially conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We update this page as each criterion is confirmed.
4. How the Services were evaluated
- Evaluated by: iTechVista, which builds the platform, on October 28, 2026.
- Product: the Successful Mathematics website at successfulmathematics.com, including the COGENT courses, as used by pupils, teachers and parents.
- Methods: automated testing with axe-core against WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Level A and AA, scripted checks of keyboard access, visible focus, skip links, page titles, language, headings, reflow at 320 pixels, text spacing, reduced motion and video captions, and a review of the source code.
- Pages: the public, legal and sign-in pages; the pupil home page, a course, a lesson, grades, the game, Campus Hub, messages, notifications, the store, settings and videos; the teacher dashboard, students, analytics, course builder, grades and messages; and the parent dashboard and settings.
- Settings: desktop (1280 pixels) and phone (390 pixels) widths, in the light, dark and gold themes, in Chromium.
- Fixed during the evaluation: keyboard access to scrolling tables, single-letter shortcuts, page titles, text contrast in the store and builders, a nested control in the page header, tooltips that vanished, two pages that overflowed a narrow screen, a promotional video that could not be paused, and a missing focus outline on videos.
- Re-tested: the live site was swept again after the fixes went live, 126 page views in all. Two issues remained, both listed in the table and being fixed.
5. Known exceptions and what is next
- Parts of the Mech Vector game and the 3D sandbox need a mouse or touch screen: looking around the 3D base, some arcade cabinets, and turning the sandbox’s 3D graphs. Missions and walking around the base work from the keyboard. These are optional extras: every lesson, question and assessment can be completed without them.
- Lesson podcasts do not yet have transcripts. The same material is in the lesson text.
- Course PDFs are shown as page images in the secure viewer and have not yet been audited.
- Google sign-in and Stripe checkout are provided by those companies, under their own accessibility commitments.
Now under way: podcast transcripts, keyboard and button controls for the game and the 3D sandbox, screen reader testing (NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver) and testing in more browsers.
6. Conformance report (WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA)
This table follows the WCAG edition of the Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), using its terms: Supports, Partially Supports, Does Not Support and Not Applicable.
| Criterion | Level | Conformance | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.1.1 Non-text Content | A | Partially Supports | Images and controls have text alternatives on every page tested, and the game's mission board has a written description. A one-by-one review of mathematical figures is in progress. |
| 1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded) | A | Partially Supports | Lesson podcasts cover the same material as the lesson text. Separate transcripts are being added. |
| 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded) | A | Partially Supports | Promotional videos have caption tracks, and lesson videos have captions built into the picture. Confirmation across all 1,038 lesson videos is in progress. |
| 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded) | A | Partially Supports | Lesson narration describes what is shown on screen. Video-by-video confirmation is in progress. |
| 1.2.4 Captions (Live) | AA | Partially Supports | Being confirmed for live class sessions. |
| 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded) | AA | Partially Supports | As for 1.2.3. |
| 1.3.1 Info and Relationships | A | Partially Supports | Headings, lists, tables and form labels are marked up for assistive technology, and automated checks pass. Screen reader confirmation is in progress. |
| 1.3.2 Meaningful Sequence | A | Partially Supports | Reading order follows the page layout on the pages tested. Screen reader confirmation is in progress. |
| 1.3.3 Sensory Characteristics | A | Partially Supports | Instructions are written out in text. A review of every instruction is in progress. |
| 1.3.4 Orientation | AA | Supports | No page locks the screen orientation. Pages were checked at phone and desktop widths. |
| 1.3.5 Identify Input Purpose | AA | Partially Supports | Sign-in and sign-up fields identify their purpose so browsers can fill them in. The remaining forms are being checked. |
| 1.4.1 Use of Color | A | Partially Supports | Right and wrong answers are stated in words, not by color alone. A full review is in progress. |
| 1.4.2 Audio Control | A | Partially Supports | Video that plays on its own is muted. A review of game and Arena sound is in progress. |
| 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) | AA | Partially Supports | Text meets the contrast minimum in the light, dark and gold themes on the pages tested, apart from one hint in the course builder, which is being fixed. Some decorative figures cannot be measured automatically and are being checked by hand. |
| 1.4.4 Resize Text | AA | Partially Supports | Pages reflow to a 320-pixel width, which WCAG treats as equal to 400% zoom. A separate browser-zoom check is in progress. |
| 1.4.5 Images of Text | AA | Partially Supports | Mathematics is rendered as real text, not pictures of text. A one-by-one image review is in progress. |
| 1.4.10 Reflow | AA | Partially Supports | Pages fit a 320-pixel-wide screen without sideways scrolling, apart from the store page, which is being fixed. Wide data tables and the game and 3D scenes scroll in both directions, as WCAG allows for content that needs a two-dimensional layout. |
| 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast | AA | Partially Supports | The focus outline meets the 3:1 contrast minimum. Control borders are being measured. |
| 1.4.12 Text Spacing | AA | Partially Supports | Text spacing can be increased without losing content, except some shortened card titles, which are being fixed. |
| 1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus | AA | Partially Supports | Tooltips stay open while hovered and close with Escape. Other pop-ups are being checked. |
| 2.1.1 Keyboard | A | Partially Supports | Lessons, quizzes, forms, menus and scrolling areas work from the keyboard, and so do Mech Vector missions and walking around the game base. Keyboard controls for looking around the 3D base, some arcade cabinets and the 3D sandbox are being added. |
| 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap | A | Partially Supports | No keyboard trap was found. The math input and the game are being checked exhaustively. |
| 2.1.4 Character Key Shortcuts | A | Partially Supports | Site shortcuts use a modifier key such as Alt, or work only inside their own tool. The game's own keys are being checked. |
| 2.2.1 Timing Adjustable | A | Partially Supports | A warning comes before an idle sign-out. Timed quizzes are part of the assessment, and teachers can give a pupil extra time. |
| 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide | A | Partially Supports | Video that plays on its own has a pause button, and animation stops when the device asks for reduced motion. Remaining moving content is being reviewed. |
| 2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold | A | Partially Supports | Flash analysis of the videos and the game is in progress. |
| 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks | A | Supports | Verified: "Skip to main content" is the first stop on every tested page. |
| 2.4.2 Page Titled | A | Partially Supports | Pages have their own titles, including the name of the lesson or course that is open. Titles for staff tools are being added. |
| 2.4.3 Focus Order | A | Partially Supports | Focus moves in a logical order on the pages tested. A check of every stop on every page is in progress. |
| 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) | A | Partially Supports | Every link has a name. A review of link wording is in progress. |
| 2.4.5 Multiple Ways | AA | Partially Supports | Menus, search and the help center give several ways to reach pages. A systematic review is in progress. |
| 2.4.6 Headings and Labels | AA | Partially Supports | Each page tested has a main heading and labeled fields. The game's heading is being made available before its opening screen. |
| 2.4.7 Focus Visible | AA | Partially Supports | A visible focus outline is shown site-wide, including on videos. The Google sign-in button draws its own. |
| 2.5.1 Pointer Gestures | A | Partially Supports | Single-pointer alternatives to drag and pinch are being added to the graphing tool, the 3D sandbox and the game. |
| 2.5.2 Pointer Cancellation | A | Partially Supports | Buttons and links act when the pointer is released, as standard. Custom controls are being checked. |
| 2.5.3 Label in Name | A | Partially Supports | Visible labels match the names assistive technology reads on the controls checked. A full review is in progress. |
| 2.5.4 Motion Actuation | A | Not Applicable | Nothing responds to shaking or tilting the device. |
| 3.1.1 Language of Page | A | Supports | Verified: every page declares English. |
| 3.1.2 Language of Parts | AA | Partially Supports | Passages in another language are being identified and marked. |
| 3.2.1 On Focus | A | Partially Supports | Moving focus did not change the page unexpectedly on any page tested. A full review is in progress. |
| 3.2.2 On Input | A | Partially Supports | Changing a setting did not move to another page without warning on any page tested. A full review is in progress. |
| 3.2.3 Consistent Navigation | AA | Partially Supports | Shared page layouts keep navigation in the same place. A formal review is in progress. |
| 3.2.4 Consistent Identification | AA | Partially Supports | Shared components keep controls named the same way across the site. A formal review is in progress. |
| 3.3.1 Error Identification | A | Partially Supports | Sign-in and sign-up errors are announced as they appear. The remaining forms are being checked. |
| 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions | A | Partially Supports | Every field has a label. Math answer boxes are getting labels that name their question. |
| 3.3.3 Error Suggestion | AA | Partially Supports | Refused forms say what went wrong. A full review of suggestions is in progress. |
| 3.3.4 Error Prevention (Legal, Financial, Data) | AA | Partially Supports | Payments are reviewed and confirmed on the checkout page before any charge. Quiz submission is being checked. |
| 4.1.1 Parsing | A | Supports | For HTML, the W3C treats this criterion as always met. |
| 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value | A | Partially Supports | Controls expose their name, role and state to assistive technology, and every problem found was fixed. Screen reader confirmation is in progress. |
| 4.1.3 Status Messages | AA | Partially Supports | Answer results and notifications are announced to assistive technology without moving focus. Screen reader confirmation is in progress. |
